The problem is not whether they want each other, they do. feral and consistent. In the kind of way that turns “a quick night” into an all-night problem. The kind that makes sleep optional and mornings inconvenient and leaves them wrecked in the most functional way possible.
It is not delicate or not polite. It is the heat you do not describe to your friends unless you want them to look at you differently forever.
The complication is that being friends makes them good at this. Good at communicating, reading each other, showing up without asking for more than they agreed to.
Good enough that everyone else starts acting like a label is required, like proximity automatically equals commitment, like decency must be a declaration.
Nolan would like to file a complaint. Ren would like to make it worse on purpose.
Ren has never met an assumption she did not want to poke with a stick. Nolan has never met an inaccurate narrative he was willing to tolerate.
So the agreement remains exactly what it was. The question is whether their lives will keep letting it stay that simple once liking each other becomes the most permanent part of the deal.
